Quotes I Live By

I keep my growing collection of favorite quotes (more than 200) available to read on the top right of each page of my blog (one at a time). I’ve had a few people tell me that they’ve spent time refreshing page after page on my blog in order to read more of them. It always makes me smile. Of my collection, there are a few that I think of constantly and bring up in conversations on a regular basis. These are quotes that have shaped me in one way or another and that I live by. I thought that it would be worthwhile for myself, and for those of you that like a good quote, to put my top fifteen in a list.
  1. “Constraints are advantages in disguise. Limited resources force you to make do with what you’ve got. There’s no room for waste. And that forces you to be creative.” Jason Fried, Rework
  2. “Being good at anything is like figure skating – the definition of being good at it is being able to make it look easy. But it never is easy.” Hugh Macleod, Ignore Everybody
  3. “If you were to always act in your greatest self-interest, you would always obey God.” Mark Batterson
  4. “It makes you wonder how many of the ideas we believe are the result of our being taught them, and we now defend them as a position of our egos.” Donald Miller
  5. “Unless a man has trained himself for his chance, the chance will only make him look ridiculous.” William Matthews
  6. “Pretending is acting a certain way and hoping that someday you will feel that way. Hypocrisy is acting in a certain way and never intending to feel that way.” C.S. Lewis
  7. “If failure is not an option, then neither is success.” Seth Godin
  8. “But surely, it is the mark of a grown-up man, as compared with a callow youth, that he finds his center of gravity wherever he happens to be at the moment, and however much he longs for the object of his desire, it cannot prevent him from staying at his post and doing his duty?” Dietrich Bonhoeffer
  9. “Never offend people with style when you can offend them with substance.” Mike Foster
  10. “If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh. Otherwise they’ll kill you.” Oscar Wilde
  11. “Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is take a nap.” John Ortberg
  12. “Quiet people have the loudest minds.” Stephen Hawking
  13. “Everything that needs to be said has already been said. But, since no one was listening, everything must be said again.” André Gide
  14. “Those who never make mistakes work for those of us who do.” Henry Ford
  15. “Few people are successful unless a lot of other people want them to be.” Charles Brower
Of the fifteen, which one is your favorite?
