Attila the Hun

I just finished the book, The Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun, by Wess Roberts, Ph.D. Depending on who you ask or what source you read, Attila the Hun is portrayed as a ruthless tyrant or as a noble king. In his book, Roberts assumes the best of him and makes up leadership advice that Attila might have said to develop his chieftains. Mixed within a brief, and somewhat sketchy, timeline of Attila’s life, is the relevant leadership info Attila would have learned and taught to his men. There are some great leadership ideas here and ultimately it makes for an entertaining way to read them. Here are a few of my favorite quotes from “Attila”:

Wordle

Thanks to Romi, I found a great website called Wordle. It takes text and represents it as a word cloud. It sizes each word according to how many times it appears in your text. You can customize it any number of ways. Here is what the Gospel of John looks like in one example:

Social Vibe

I found this great website called Social Vibe that allows you to help out a cause of your choice in a unique way. Here is how it works:

  1. sign up and create an account (if you sign up by following the link below I get credit for my cause)
  2. pick a sponsor that you like (I’m using Apple and Xbox)
  3. pick a cause that you want to support (I’m supporting To Write Love on Her Arms)
  4. social vibe will then generate an html code that you can put on your blog, facebook, myspace, or any other online site you have
  5. every time someone views a page where you have an ad you get a “credit” for it that translates to money for your sponsor

I think this is a pretty ingenious idea and I’d encourage you all to take a look at it and try it for yourselves.

Tomorrow’s Reflection Gets a Makeover

Hey friends,

I’ve overhauled the look of TR and this should allow me to do more with my blogging while also helping you to navigate with greater ease. So take a look around the site and let me know what you think!

P.S. You can pick which accent color you prefer by selecting a color from the color boxes at the top of the page. It will then load the site using that color from that point on.

The Blogfather

I just finished reading Blog: Understanding the Information Reformation That’s Changing Your World, by Hugh Hewitt. He is considered by many to be a “blogfather,” a term for a person who inspires others to blog. Although I’ve been blogging for awhile now, I was motivated even more by his book in my blogging aspirations. If you currently blog, or are considering it, then I would highly recommend this to you.

One of the intriguing parallels he makes in the book is the current change that blogging is having in our culture compared with what happened with the invention of the printing press and Martin Luther. Basically, culture is shifting because the control of information is becoming more and more decentralized.

In his conclusion he hits on a point that I want to address:

“The key to keep in mind is that trust drives everything. To build and maintain trust is a tremendously difficult thing, requiring patient attention to detail and discipline over long periods of time.”

And so, if you are reading this, I want to thank you for your trust. I have tried hard to blog about content that would interest most people and would also allow myself an outlet for public reflection as I learn from the community around me as well. It has been fun so far and I hope to keep improving as we go. I am always very appreciative of comments that you all leave. Thanks for reading!
