Here’s an amazing line that came from Jesus’ mouth: “With God all things are possible.” This is very true, and very amazing. Here’s the context that prompted Jesus to say it in Matthew 19:16-26:
Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?†“Why do you ask me about what is good?†Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.†“Which ones?†he inquired. Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’†“All these I have kept,†the young man said. “What do I still lack?†Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.†When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.†When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?†Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.â€
This is the video from our worship night yesterday at Central. Our theme was “Unseen” and my main idea was that the more we experience God, the more we worship Him.
I talked about incorporating our five senses into worship and also gave a different look at communion.
In the video above you can watch my three-year-old daughter Adelyn tell me the story of the witch she recently saw at a store. I’m obviously a bit biased, but I think she’s adorable. It’s only a few minutes to watch it (and I’d encourage you to stop and do that before you read on), but the point is that she really wants me to go to the store and see this witch myself.
And so, a few days later I went to see the witch with Adelyn. Notice her face in this photo.
Yesterday I had the chance to have lunch with an old friend named Tony. We met at Costa Vida, one of our mutually favorite places. As we were ordering I joked with the employees that I didn’t know why they always ask me what meat I ordered (when I pay at the end of the line) since they are known for their sweet pork. I teased them that they should basically just ask what form you want to eat your sweet pork in (nachos, tacos, quesadilla, salad, etc.).
Tony and I sat for a couple hours catching up on life, ministry, and the things God has been doing in our lives. About five years ago I hired him as an intern at Central and he’s spent the last 4-5 years at other churches and he now lives in another state. It’s awesome to see him in ministry in a greater capacity today. It was also a cool moment when Tony handed me a copy of his book he recently released. It’s called The Ugly Couch and talks about a lot of the lessons he’s been learning. You can support him and get your own copy of it here. Tony did a Kickstarter for it and put in a lot of hard work. I shared with him some of the things I’ve been learning about writing. There was something so fulfilling to me about a friendship maturing over time and distance.

I spent the last two days with more than 2000 leaders in my community. We absorbed insights and encouragement from speakers at this year’s Global Leadership Summit. For those of you who may be unaware, the Leadership Summit is a two-day conference hosted by Willow Creek Community Church in Chicago. Central hosted the event the last few years and this year we hosted it at two of our campuses.
